Gas oven with electric ignition does not heat.

January 16th, 2007 · 2 Comments

In this article we are going to talk about gas ovens with electric ignition used flat or spiral (round) igniters. In most cases, there are only three electric parts involved in the igniting and heating process: an oven thermostat, a gas burner valve and an igniter. How to find out if the problem with your oven is a bad igniter? The first thing you do is a visual test. Turn the oven thermostat on, wait at least 30 seconds and take a look at the igniter. It should glow very bright red, almost close to white. Normal time for the igniter to open the gas burner valve and to light up the burner is between 40 second to 1 minute. If it glows red but not bright and even if it does light up the burner but it takes more than a minute, the igniter is bad and has to be replaced. If it does not glow at all, remove the power from the oven, remove the igniter wires and check for continuity between these wires. If there is no continuity, replace the igniter. If there is continuity, then the problem could be with other parts and troubleshooting has to be performed in accordance with the model number for your oven. Oven igniters are very universal and very few of them will be good enough for all American made ovens but you must replace the flat igniter only with the flat one and the round igniter only with the round one.
The part number for the least expensive flat igniter made by GE is WB2X9998

The part number for the least expensive round igniter made by Whirlpool is 4342528

You can find the model number on the frame behind the bottom drawer or under the top panel.
